Upcoming: Movie reviews

“I have an assignment for you, son!” said Dad one morning on our jog.

“Ummm…another one?” I replied.

“You’ll like this one,” he said. “It’s fun.”

“OK,” I said, (not entirely trusting him) “What is it?”

I have to stop my narrative for just a second. We’re in the process of acquiting another house to use as a short-term rental fro whoever wants to stay in the area for a few days (if you know the area in which we live, you’re probally wondering what the draw could possibly be in a place like this. We’re kinda wondering the same thing). Dad and I are lookign around for a TV for the living room. We plan to also include a library of some of our best DVDs for the renters to watch. I’m trying to get him to get an Xbox for the house too, but…

“How about writing movie reviews to give the renters?” contiued my Dad, “So they know which ones are the best, it they have content issues, etc.”

“That sounds like fun,” I said, “When do I get started?”

“As soon as you want. You can poist them on your blog for now…”

And that concluded our conversation. I ran the remainder of the way home developing thoughts on my first movie review. “What move should I do it on? What do I want to include in my reivew? How should I…?”

I hope to post my first review in the next few weeks. Until then, Happy Thanksgiving!

Ross Lake

If there’s something we look forward to every year more then everything else (except Christmas), it would be our annual camping trip to Ross Lake. We pack for a week, camp for 5 days, and unpack for a week. But the work we do to get ready for our trip, is very much made up for during those five days at the lake.

Here’s are some highlights from the trip, in our own words:

Abbey: “My favorite part of the camping trip was picture scavenger hunt. We split up into two teams and Mom gave us a list of things to take pictures of. Some of them were ‘Something tall, something short, and something gross!’”

Emma: My favorite part of the camping trip was swimming. We made a raft out of logs and floated around on it. The water was warmer and clearer then our pool!”

Kate: “One of my favorite parts about the camping trip were the mornings. Because you would wake up and there was another whole day ahead of you. One of the morning Dad and I went fishing, but we didn’t catch anything.”

Rebecca: “I liked the boat rides because our dog went in the boat and was cute. And the waves were fun. And that’s all!” Editor’s note: Becca tented to “lose it” on the boat rides. Some pictures are provided.

I personally like the scenery, boating, and snorkeling. There’s lots of places to explore around the campsite, and so many more places to go in the boat. The food is always great (thanks to Dad), and he makes sure that everyone is safe. This was one of the most fun years I’ve had at Ross Lake. Click “Continue Reading” below to see some pictures.

My Trip to Colorado – 2011

Colorado is a great place to go camping, hiking, and jeeping. It’s home thousands of acres of farmland, which are primarily made up of corn, hay, and wheat.  The high altitude of Denver and the surrounding area takes a little getting used to, especially if you’re from sea-level (like me!). I went with my dad and one of his work colleagues on a 5-day trip to experience all of this first-hand!

We left around 7 in the morning and caught the plane to Seattle, and from there, to Denver. Since dad purchased my ticket late, I wasn’t able to sit next to him on the plane, but I did get to sit next to a crying baby!

The first thing I realized about Colorado was how spread out everything was. We landed in the Denver International Airport, but I couldn’t even see Denver from the airport. It took about an hour to drive from the airport to our hotel.

After a day of meetings, dad, his colleague, and I drove to the trailhead.

It was about a 2-mile hike to our campsite. All uphill. Soon, it began getting dark. Thunder boomed and lighting flashed. It started to rain. I was beginning to think about bears, and every time I saw a dark tree stump, I took a few steps backward. But, to my relief, we caught a glimpse of a campfire through the trees. We set up our tents and fell asleep almost instantly.

We started up Mt. Belford bright and early in the morning. It was only a 2-mile hike, but it was also straight up, with lots of switchbacks.

The turnoff to Mt. Belford

Not much happened from the turnoff to the top, except a lot of sweating and sucking air. (did I mention this mountain is 14,197 ft. high?)

It was great to finally get to the top. We sat on the rocks and ate our lunch, while enjoying the beauty around us.

The top!

The next day, we hiked out in the morning and drove around visiting various “ghost towns”, which some people even still live in as a summer getaway. Kinda creepy.

Ghost Town!

People live in these...

We then drove to the small town Beuna Vista to have lunch and rent a jeep. We rented a 2-door jeep, so I had to climb in through the window.

Cool jeep!

We drove up a bumpy, rocky road, with steep cliffs off the side. It was kind of freaky, especially when we had to back up one time to make a sharp turn.

A Rocky road

When we finally got to the top, it was an awesome view!

(if the above interactive doesn’t work, here’s a normal picture):

At the top!

We drove back down the mountain, dropped off the jeep, and headed back to Denver. On the way there we passed by some pretty scenery.

We stayed at a hotel in Denver, with a REAL bed and a REAL shower! Wow!

The next day we headed back to the airport, and took off for home.

I really enjoyed my time in Colorado. Have any of you guys been there? What did you do there? Let me know in the comments!

Until next time!

My Birthday!

I just recently had a birthday! I went geocaching, swimming (twice), and bike riding! Other then that, it was pretty low-key. But those kind of birthdays!

On previous birthdays, I usually had the typical for desert (cake and ice cream, etc.). But this time I wanted to do something a little different.

I’m a big fan of the game Portal (btw, I got Portal 2 for my birthday! Thanks Grandma!), so I searched Google for the Portal cake recipe and found this:

http://www.food.com/recipe/cake-from-portal-264919

If this isn’t making any sense whatsoever (Portal? Video games? Cake?), take a look here: http://half-life.wikia.com/wiki/Cake

It turned out better then I expected. Way better. Here are a few pictures:

All in all, I had a wonderful birthday! Tonight, as sort of a belated birthday activity, I’m going to see Super 8 with one of my friends. I think this year is going to be awesome!!

Building A Computer

My Dad and I are working on “making” a computer to replace the one I have now. We were initially going to put it in the school room for the family to use, but the case we bought was too big! So, it got passed down to me!

Here is a picture of my computers temporary location while we work on it:

Here are few pictures of the inside:

These pictures show the motherboard, power supply, and the fans. The motherboard is the “brains” of the computer, the thing that makes it all work. The power supply carries power to the motherboard, fans, and hard drive. The fans keep the computer cool. I also have 120GB SSD card installed, which is much faster than traditional hard drives. For you geeks out there, here is a PDF of the specs for the whole computer.

We have pretty much finished building it, we just need to hook up another hard drive and the DVD drive. Here a list of the parts we used inside the case.

I named my computer Glados, one of the main characters in Portal. My desktop background suits the name pretty well.
